Screening
of WATER FIRST: Reaching the Millennium Development Goals
November 17, 2009 at University of Denver
Several
International Organizations
in Denver worked together to organize and fund
the screening of
a thought-provoking documentary on Malawi Freshwater Project and its founder,
Charles Banda (former participant of DIP and
intern at Project C.U.R.E.). The educational film was directed by Amy Hart. The event was attended by many globally-minded Denver
community members, water purification experts, and fans of
Charles Banda.
The film conveys the critical importance of clean water
and sanitation in achieving all of the United Nations
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and relieving
global poverty. Water For People continues to support and
partner with Banda and the Malawi Freshwater
Project.
Korbel School of
International Studies was an additional sponsor of this
event.
More information about the Malawi Freshwater
project and Charles Banda is available in
a press
release.

Clockwise from the
left: Heidi Rickels, Project
CURE; Katie Burke,
Executive Director of DIP ; Dr. James W.
Jackson, Founder of Project C.U.R.E.; Ned Breslin, CEO, Water for People; Charles Banda, Founder of Malawi Freshwater
Project , former DIP participant,
intern at Project C.U.R.E., and partner of Water for
People.

Daniele - Brest,
France
The Denver International Program
is thrilled to team up with Denver Sister Cities
International and Denver Center for International
Studies to host
Daniele from Brest, France. Funding for Daniele's
program was provided through a Denver Sister Cities
International grant. Daniele will be in Denver from February 25th - March
25th, 2010 and will be doing the majority of her training at
Denver Center for International Studies. She will
take that training back to her school and implement in
France. Please click here if you are interested in
volunteering to host/accompany Daniele on a cultural activity. Stay
tuned for upcoming announcements about fireside dates, where you can
learn more about Daniele's experience in Denver and about teaching
in her home town in France.

Library of Congress
Open World
Leadership
5 Russian
delegates
DIP and our Partner Organization CIPUSA have been honored with the grant to host 5
Russian delegates and a facilitator here in Denver for 10 days. The Open World
Leadership grant is sponsored by the Library of Congress. The delegates are
trained and interested in Environmental Issues. Please click the
following if you are interested in hosting a
delegate, assisting with cultural
activities, or know
anyone involved with environmental issues along the front
range who may be able to provide a site
visit for these
outstanding participants.

Meet DIP's new Executive Director
Katie
Burke, iMBA
Katie has had a diverse career
including Business Consulting, Non-Profit Management, and
Intercultural Coaching. She earned her international MBA from Purdue
University's Hannover Campus in Germany, which allowed for
working closely with individuals from 26 different countries
ranging from Uzbekistan to Ghana, South Korea to
Columbia. While
working with classmates in this professional educational
environment, Katie recognized the necessity for identifying
and respecting different cultural behaviors and traditions in
order to achieve successful and effective cross-cultural
communications. She then focused her studies, through theoretical
instruction and first-hand experience, on cross-cultural
communications. She values international education and exposure as
paramount pieces in the world integration puzzle. Katie has
traveled, worked, or studied in nearly 30
countries.
The home stays (from as short as 10-day stays to the
more typical 4-6 week stays) through DIP are a vital element
of the program, greatly enriching the participant's
experience - DIP host families make it all possible.
Host families provide the participants with a private room,
private or shared bathroom, and some meals. Participants
have RTD bus passes and pay for their
telephone calls. While hosts receive no compensation,
they may be eligible for a tax deduction.
If
you're interested in hosting again or hosting for the first
time, please let us know. Hosting a DIP participant is
fantastic way to learn about another
culture and help DIP participants learn about life in
Colorado. As one host put it, "It's a great way to
experience the world without leaving home!" For more
information, email Jen Dunn at jenjamino@earthlink.net .
